The key facade design trends discussed during the 3rd Facades Design & Engineering UAE Summit
The third annual Façades Design & Engineering UAE Summit 2016, was successfully held at the Address Hotel, Dubai Mall, on the 26th and 27th of September 2016 in Dubai UAE. By attending this leading and revolutionary event, our technical team had the opportunity to highlight the variety of topics presented by speakers and discuss the complexity surrounding the design of modern building skins.
The summit gathered more than 100 developers, architects, engineers, designers and suppliers together, where topics relating to new regulations, technology and challenges were all discussed. To create architectural building skins that are innovative, striking and state-of-the-art is a pre-requisite around the globe. UAE stands out as top class quality market and a leader to the rest of the world in terms of innovative facade engineering but given the extreme climate conditions and client requirements, it has become one of the most challenging aspects of building design.
The facade as the interface between the outside and inside of a building is one of the most detailed elements, with increased complexity. If executed with success, it can make the building stand out of the neighboring structures and convey elegance, status as well as increased value. The facade is the only part of the building that acts as a barrier between the interior space and the exterior area. Its purpose is to create a comfortable environment inside, whilst providing a unique architectural view from the adjacent public area and far beyond, depending on the visibility and height of the building.
Facade system solutions, especially curtain walling, have evolved significantly over the last decade or so. The vision of letting as much light into the building as possible created a new approach in design, which apart from that, had to be compliant to very strict regulations and requirements, as well as make a step further to energy efficiency and sustainability. As a further step, facades were segmented into layers with different functions towards multiple skin arrangements, such as (from outside to inside) shading, natural cooling, ventilation, noise control, glare control and insulation among others.
The future seems to lead to further complex geometries and the desire for larger glass elements with less visible structure. Sustainability aspirations have already started to drive the design, while at times the target is to accomplish the best possible detailing despite a modest project budget.
